Claude is the silent playable protagonist of Grand Theft Auto III, released in 2001. After his girlfriend Catalina shoots him during a bank robbery in Liberty City, he escapes custody and works his way through the city's crime families to get revenge. He never speaks, and his name was only made official in San Andreas (2004).

Who is the main character in GTA III?

The player in Grand Theft Auto III controls a quiet career criminal who is never named in the game itself. Fans and Rockstar call him Claude. He was the first protagonist of the series to be shown as a full 3D character, walking the streets of Liberty City rather than being seen from high above.

Claude does not speak a single line. Other characters talk at him, shout at him and give him orders. He answers with a nod or a stare. According to Wikipedia's account of the game's development, the team did not treat his silence as a big problem next to their other challenges, and they felt it helped players see themselves in him.

Story

The game opens with a bank robbery. Claude's partner and girlfriend, Catalina, turns on him, shoots him and leaves him for the police. He is convicted, but on the way to prison his transport is attacked by the Colombian Cartel, and he escapes in the chaos.

Claude then takes whatever work Liberty City offers. He starts in Portland with the Leone Mafia family, does jobs for Joey Leone and Toni Cipriani, and helps the family in its war with the Triads. He also destroys a Cartel ship used to make the drug SPANK. The boss, Salvatore Leone, grows suspicious and sets him up with a car bomb. Salvatore's wife Maria warns him in time.

From there Claude moves to Staunton Island and works for the Yakuza under Asuka Kasen. To prove his loyalty, he kills Salvatore. Later the media tycoon Donald Love hires him, and one of those jobs is the killing of Asuka's brother Kenji, staged to look like a Cartel attack. Claude keeps hurting the Cartel's drug business along the way.

In the end, Catalina kidnaps Maria and demands a ransom of $500,000. The handover is a trap. Claude fights his way out, rescues Maria and shoots down the helicopter Catalina tries to flee in, killing her. The final scene fades to black while Maria talks, and a gunshot is heard. The game leaves the meaning open. Read more about the city on our Liberty City page.

Is Claude in GTA San Andreas?

Yes, briefly. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is set in 1992, nine years before GTA III. Catalina, who has just split from Carl "CJ" Johnson, turns up with a new partner: a silent street racer. CJ beats him in a race in the countryside. As the prize, Claude hands over a run-down garage in San Fierro, which CJ later turns into a business. Claude then leaves San Andreas with Catalina. These details come from the GTA Wiki and TheGamer.

The game also settled his name. Near the end of the story, Catalina phones CJ and calls her companion Claude. Wikipedia notes that this was the first official confirmation of the name.

Is Claude from GTA III the same as Claude Speed from GTA 2?

This is one of the oldest fan debates in the series. The hero of Grand Theft Auto 2 (1999) is called Claude Speed, and the shared first name led many fans to link the two men. Rockstar has never confirmed it.

Rockstar's own framing points the other way. Wikipedia describes the series as split into separate universes named after their graphics era, with the 2D games (including GTA 2) apart from the 3D games that began with GTA III. In a 2011 Q&A on the Rockstar Newswire for the game's tenth anniversary, as cited by the GTA Wiki, Rockstar described Claude as a drifter, probably from the West Coast, and said his surname may or may not be Speed. The same answer said he is not dead, but that his later fate is unknown.

  • ConfirmedHis name is Claude. It was first given officially in San Andreas. Wikipedia
  • ReportedRockstar left open whether his surname is Speed, in a 2011 Rockstar Newswire Q&A. GTA Wiki, citing Rockstar
  • Not knownWhat happened to Claude after the events of GTA III.

Development and reception

Wikipedia reports that the developers had no single model in mind for Claude. They wanted a "strong, silent killer" to sit against the talkative, nervous mobsters around him. The game itself was a major hit. It scored 97 on Metacritic for the PlayStation 2 version and sold more than 14.5 million copies by March 2008, according to Wikipedia.

Claude's silence became a talking point when Vice City arrived a year later with a fully voiced lead, Tommy Vercetti. Many reviewers preferred the louder hero. Even so, Claude remains a fixture of the series' history as the face of its move into 3D.
