Victor Vance
Victor "Vic" Vance is the protagonist of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories (2006). Set in 1984, it follows a US Army corporal who is pushed out of the military and into crime while trying to support his family. He first appeared in GTA Vice City (2002) as the man killed in its opening drug deal. Dorian Missick voiced him in Vice City Stories.
Who is Victor Vance?
Victor Vance, usually called Vic, is a soldier who turns to crime to look after his family. He is the hero of Vice City Stories, a prequel to Vice City. His brothers are Lance, who later partners with Tommy Vercetti, and Pete, who has asthma and needs costly medicine.
Unlike most GTA leads, Vic starts the story as a reluctant criminal. He does not like drugs. He takes dirty jobs because he needs money, and the game shows him being drawn deeper in step by step.
Story of Vice City Stories
In 1984 Vic is a corporal at Fort Baxter, an army base in Vice City. His sergeant, Jerry Martinez, is corrupt. He offers Vic side work to pay for Pete's treatment and then uses him. Vic is framed for drug possession and misconduct, charged and dishonourably discharged.
With no career left, Vic teams up with the gun-runner Phil Cassidy and works for Marty Jay Williams, a small-time gang leader. Vic ends up killing Marty and taking over his gang, which becomes the Vance Crime Family. Lance arrives in town, and the two brothers build a business by taking rackets from rival gangs.
That growth puts them on a collision course with the Mendez brothers, Armando and Diego, who run a drug cartel. Louise Cassidy-Williams, who is close to Vic, is captured by the cartel. Vic kills Armando and then goes after Martinez and Diego, killing both in a rooftop battle. At the end he turns down one more drug deal and leaves Vice City with Lance, with money for Pete's medicine.
What happens to Victor Vance in GTA Vice City?
Vic's story ends badly. Vice City opens in 1986 with a drug deal at the docks between the Vance brothers and the Forelli family, with Tommy Vercetti on the other side. Gunmen ambush the meeting. One of the men killed is the Vance brother who handed over the cocaine. Wikipedia notes that Rockstar later confirmed this was Vic.
His death gives Lance his motive in Vice City. Lance works with Tommy to find the man behind the ambush, the drug lord Ricardo Diaz. So by the time players meet him in Vice City Stories, they already know how his story will end.
