Niko Bellic is the protagonist of Grand Theft Auto IV (2008). A war veteran from Eastern Europe, he moves to Liberty City to join his cousin Roman and to track down the man who betrayed his army unit years before. He also appears in both GTA IV episodes. Michael Hollick provided his voice and motion capture.

Who is the main character in GTA IV?

Niko Bellic is the playable lead of Grand Theft Auto IV. He grew up in an unnamed part of Eastern Europe and fought as a teenager in a war the game never names. What he saw there left him cynical, and the story suggests he did terrible things too. The game never states his nationality. Sam Houser described him as coming from a broken-down, grey corner of Eastern Europe, and many journalists later called him Serbian.

During the war, Niko's unit was ambushed and almost wiped out. He came to believe one of his own comrades had sold them out. Only two other men survived: Florian Cravic and Darko Brevic. After the war Niko worked in a smuggling ring run by Ray Bulgarin, then fled to sea on cargo ships.

Story

Niko arrives in Liberty City in 2008. His cousin Roman had written about mansions and sports cars. The truth is a small taxi firm and a pile of gambling debts. Niko starts out helping Roman with his problems and soon becomes a gun for hire.

Over the course of the game he works for a long list of bosses. They include the Russian mobsters Vlad Glebov, Mikhail Faustin and Dimitri Rascalov, the Irish McReary family, mob figures Ray Boccino and Jimmy Pegorino, and others.

A shadowy agency called United Liberty Paper also pulls him in. It clears his record in exchange for killings, and it helps him find the men from his past. Niko tracks down Florian, who convinces him he was not the traitor. The agency then locates Darko, and Niko finally faces him.

How does GTA IV end?

Near the end, Pegorino asks Niko to join a heroin deal with Dimitri. The player's choice decides the ending.

ChoiceWhat happens
Revenge (refuse the deal)Niko kills Dimitri's men instead. Pegorino attacks Roman's wedding and kills Kate McReary by accident. Niko, with Roman and Little Jacob, then hunts down and kills Pegorino.
Deal (take the deal)Dimitri betrays Niko and sends a gunman to the wedding, who kills Roman. Niko then kills Dimitri.

In both endings, Roman's partner Mallorie is pregnant, and Niko reflects that the American Dream he was sold was empty.

Niko in the episodes and later games

Niko appears as a non-playable character in both expansions, The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony. Their heroes, Johnny Klebitz and Luis Lopez, cross paths with him during shared missions. MTV reported in 2009 that no new Niko dialogue was recorded for them.

He is not in Grand Theft Auto V, but he is mentioned. Lester Crest considers him for a heist crew, and Patrick McReary says Niko is probably dead. A social media profile in the game suggests he still works for Roman's taxi company. In GTA Online, owners of the collector's edition could choose him as a parent in the character creator.

Development and voice

Michael Hollick voiced Niko and did his motion capture. The New York Times reported that he was paid about US$100,000 for roughly fifteen months of work between 2006 and 2007. Fighting scenes used motion capture by martial artist Bas Rutten, and Niko fights mainly with Krav Maga.

Dan Houser told IGN in 2008 that Niko was meant to be a more rounded character than earlier leads. The writers made him an immigrant because it opened up more dangerous situations, and they created Roman to give him a reason to come to America. His look drew on photos of soldiers in the wars in Yugoslavia and Chechnya.

Reception

Critics praised Niko's maturity and moral grey areas. Hollick won Best Performance by a Human Male at the 2008 Spike Video Game Awards. Niko placed 14th in a Game Informer reader poll of the best characters of the 2000s and 13th on a 2011 Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition list. He is still often named among the best leads in the series, next to Tommy Vercetti and CJ.
